FRUITEA
When More Made the Problem Worse
It was a small tea shop fighting a very big problem.
COMPETITION.
The owner tried everything people usually recommend.
Add more products.
So he added:
Juice.
Fresh juice.
Snacks.
Fast food.
Then came the usual advice:
“Advertise more.”
So he advertised.
“Put up a bigger board.”
He did.
“Add more varieties.”
He added them.
“Add more chairs.”
He added them.
He tried almost everything.
But instead of improving the business…
IT AMPLIFIED THE PROBLEM.
More products.
More complexity.
More investment.
More things to manage.
But still…
the same competition.
And eventually, things became even
worse.
SO WE STOPPED ADDING.
Instead of asking:
“What else can we add to this tea shop?”
we
asked:
“WHAT CAN WE CHANGE ABOUT TEA ITSELF?”
The shop already had two sections.
One for tea.
Another for juice.
And suddenly, the answer was sitting right in front of us.
WHY SHOULD TEA AND JUICE BE TWO SEPARATE WORLDS?
WE STARTED QUESTIONING EVERY ASSUMPTION.
Regular tea has its familiar flavours.
But we asked:
“Why not fruit-flavoured tea?”
Tea is usually made with milk.
We asked:
“Why milk?” “Why not use fruit juice?”
Then:
“What happens if we combine FRUIT + TEA?”
And instead of relying only on conventional sugar…
we explored:
Honey.
Palm
sugar.
Different fruit combinations.
Different tea profiles.
The question wasn’t:
“How can we make tea better?”
It became:
“WHAT IF WE CREATE A TEA THAT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE TEA?”
THEN WE TESTED IT.
We didn’t spend heavily on advertising.
We made the new drink… and gave it to selected customers to taste.
The reaction was immediate.
“Can we have more?”
Then something even more interesting happened.
People who simply saw others drinking it became curious.
THEY ORDERED IT TOO.
The product had created its own curiosity.
That was the signal.
THEN WE TOOK THE IDEA TO THE STREET.
Instead of waiting for customers to come to the shop…
WE PUT THE TEA
SHOP ON WHEELS.
A mobile Fruitea experience.
Now the product could travel to where the customers were.
The idea wasn’t waiting for demand.
WE WENT LOOKING FOR THE TRIBE.
THEN WE CHANGED THE MAKING PROCESS.
My Brand Doctor challenged the way Fruitea was being prepared.
The product needed to be:
Repeatable.
Consistent.
Fast.
Scalable.
So we redesigned the process.
JUICE MAKING + TEA MAKING
Instead of treating them as two completely separate processes, we
created a more integrated preparation approach using tea-making equipment.
The product was no longer just an experiment.
IT WAS BECOMING A SYSTEM.
THEN WE BUILT A FOCUS GROUP.
We didn’t ask only random tea customers.
We looked for environments where people
were more likely to discover and share something new.
IT COMPANIES.
BANKS.
Working professionals.
Groups.
Teams.
People who could try it…and tell others.
The product could move through people,
not just advertising.
THEN WE BROKE ANOTHER
RULE.
Ordinary tea:
₹10
Juice:
₹50
Fruitea:
₹80
At first glance, that looks completely wrong.
Why would someone pay ₹80 for something that combines two familiar categories?
Because we weren’t selling:
Tea + juice.
We were selling:
A NEW EXPERIENCE.
Price was no longer being compared only against the cost of tea.
The customer was deciding whether the experience was worth choosing.
THE REAL BRAND FLIP
The shop started as:
A TEA SHOP.
Then it became:
Tea + juice + snacks + fast food + advertising + more chairs…
More.
More.
More.
And more didn’t solve it.
So we flipped the strategy:
LESS ADDING.
MORE QUESTIONING.
We questioned:
The flavour.
The ingredients.
The preparation.
The customer
journey.
The distribution.
The tribe.
The price.
And eventually…
WE CREATED FRUITEA.
THE BIGGER LESSON
Most businesses respond to competition by adding.
More products.
More features.
More advertising.
More discounts.
More infrastructure.
But sometimes…
MORE
IS EXACTLY WHAT MAKES THE PROBLEM WORSE.
When you are losing because you look like everyone else…
adding more of the same doesn’t make you different.
So instead of asking:
“WHAT MORE CAN WE ADD?”
ask:
“WHAT CAN WE QUESTION?”
And perhaps the most important lesson:
DON’T WAIT FOR DEMAND.
Sometimes you have to:
GO AGAINST DEMAND.
Create something people didn’t know they wanted.
Let them experience it.
Let curiosity pull them in.
Let the product create the conversation.
FRUITEA
Tea?
Juice?
WHY CHOOSE?
FRUIT + TEA.
Don’t add another
product to your tea shop.
